Textile designer and founder of Objects of Matter Ailara has a special relationship with wool and wool fabric. An admirer of Japanese culture and aesthetics, Ailara takes her inspiration from meditation and different cultures. For aere-store.com, Ailara talks about what brought her to textile design, what drives her creativity and why an oversized wool jumper is a favourite item in her wardrobe.

On textile design

“Having always been fascinated by the delicacy and power of tactile memories, be it a mother’s soft skin or the feeling of an old armchair, it was only natural for me to start working with textiles. When I am weaving I feel part of a bigger truth…  Fiber is one of my favourite art form thanks to such influencers as Lenore Tawney and Eva Hesse.”

On meditation

“I started meditating about two years ago and it became an essential part of my life. Meditation gives so much energy and teaches you to see endless possibilities within yourself. It brings balance and truth gives into everyday life. I do not know why we have so many useless subjects at schools; they teach you chemistry and geometry when often we have no idea how to deal with our own emotions. I wish I had meditation classes at school.”

On what I like to wear

“I always look for quality in garments and see each buy as a long-term friendship. I get upset when people buy clothes they are not sure about and these items end up in landfills next season. I feel a lot of joy looking at some of the clothes that have been with me for years. It’s like looking at your old photos that bring memories of places and people… In general I go for comfortable clothing: oversized jumpers, long blazers, loose-fitting trousers, warm scarves, flat shoes and a variety of coats.”

On what I like to read

“These days I mostly read books about cultural and spiritual importance of textile. There is an amazing book by Jessica Hemmings called “Yvonne Vera: The Voice of Cloth”, where textile is seen as a crucial component of the narrative rather than an occasional descriptive element. “In Praise of Shadows” by Junichirō Tanizaki is a great read for lovers of Japanese aesthetic and their unique perspective on beauty. It is an incredibly tasteful book. Gaston Bachelard’s “The Poetics of Space” is about our perception on houses and our oneiric recollections of our first homes. He talks about memories of particular smells in old wardrobes or drawers with stationary. This book takes you on a wonderful journey and brings you back to your childhood.”

On wool

“There is something maternal about wool for me. Wool is protective and soft but can be tough and strong when necessary. On a rainy day I always go for an oversized wool jumper to hug me with its warmth. This season Ms Min Ribbed Jacket works its miracles on me.”
